Now for one of my favorite RVA annual events – The Richmond
Folk Festival! The festival actually
used to be part of The National Folk Festival tour where Richmond was one of 28
stop for 3 years. But then after 2007,
the national festival decided to move to Nashville (psssshhhhh). But the point of the national festival was to
bring attention to folk and inspire cities to start their own festivals (hence
the 3 year stops in certain cities). Well
it worked! The festival became such a
popular event, Richmond decided to start putting on its own folk festival and
it has now became an 8-year tradition.
Usually held in late September or early October, the 3-day free event has
more than 30 performing groups on seven stages, a “Virginia Folklife
demonstration” area, children's activities, a folk arts marketplace, regional
and ethnic foods and more
The Richmond Folk Festival is produced by Venture Richmond
in partnership with the National Council for the Traditional Arts (NCTA), the
same organization that produces the National Folk Festival. Other producing
partners include the City of Richmond, Virginia Foundation for the Humanities,
the National Park Service, the Library of Virginia and the Children’s Museum of
Richmond. Check out the Richmond Folk
Festival website for more info! Richmond Folk Festival site
This year the festival was held from October 12-14. Sadly I was only able to make it on Sunday,
the last day, because I was out of town.
But trust me, this event is so awesome I would’ve been in there all
three days if I could. Here’s a photo
recap of my visit. Hope to see you guys
there this fall!
